Individual Disability Insurance

When youre healthy and working normally, its hard to imagine being disabled due to an illness or an injury. However, statistics show that one out of three people will become disabled for at least three months before their retirement age comes. Additionally, research shows that the majority of people dont have disability insurance or that they are not covered adequately.

There are a few questions that you should ask yourself before you can come to a point where you can decide whether you need disability insurance for yourself or not. Assume that you are no longer able to work; now, examine all the thoughts and questions that follow. First of all, think of all your current costs. For how long would you be able to continue paying without having any income? What would you do about food, house, and car payments, or about some additional expenses that you might need to make? Will you be able to stand on your own feet economically; and if so, for how long?

Additionally, in the event that you will be unable to attend work only for a short period of time, the money that you have gathered so far is very likely to be spent within the period that your disability lasts. Wouldnt it be unfair to spend the money that you gathered for many years in just a few months or years? Wouldnt it be better if you had some other source of income?

In conclusion, except for the possibility of not being able to confront your expenses in a case that you become disabled, there are other things you should consider, too. Depleting all the economic resources that you have gathered through the years just because you are unable to work for a few months is something that is very likely to happen if you become disabled. Think of both cases and try to make the best decisions for you. It will be better for you to be prepared in case something goes wrong.
