Lasik Laser Eye Surgeries

Lasik surgery is done on the cornea of the eye, with the aim of correcting vision. Lasik has been around since the mid-90s and uses a special tool to slice a part of the cornea in order to create a thin flap of tissue from the surface layer of the cornea. This flap is slowly raised so that computer guided laser beams can remove underlying corneal tissue in order to reshape the cornea. Soon after this, the flap is replaced and the eye heals through a natural process.

After the process is complete, a protective covering is placed over the eye to keep it protected while it is healing. The patient could be subjected to mild pain subsequent to surgery. An analgesic will be able to take care of that. In case of unusual pain, the doctor should be informed straight away. Some post-surgery blurriness in vision is to be expected. This will improve dramatically in most cases. Photosensitivity is not uncommon for up to two week after surgery. Wearing dark glasses can negate this.

It is very important to find a qualified Lasik surgeon. It is equally important to know that not everyone is a good candidate for Lasik surgery. Every potential candidate's eyes have to be measured because some people have pupils that are too large, for example.

It is absolutely essential to check if the doctor is using technology approved by the USFDA. Complications do arise from this surgery, but the incidence is relatively low. Double-check if the equipment being used has been sterilized. There have been cases of equipment malfunction and unsterilized blades. Flap complications do occur sometimes. This could mean wrinkles and inflammation after the operation. It does occasionally happen that the flap does not replace itself accurately. Correction could be incomplete too. Visual inconsistencies such as poor night vision, double vision or sensitivity to light are not impossible either. These are but some examples of the possible aftereffects.

Not everyone achieves 20/20 perfect vision. Corrective eyewear may be necessary. There are very clear benefits to be had from Lasik surgery. Improved vision is one of them; little of no recovery time is another. Both eyes can be corrected at once, unlike in other eye surgeries. There is a chance that one will never need glasses or lenses ever again. Lasik is a clear winner when it comes to outdoor activities, such as diving and other water and contact sports.
